BGGC’s Apex Academy: Making Strides in the Competitive Gaming Industry

In collaboration with EA Games/Respawn Entertainment, Brown Girl Gamer Code held the Apex Academy, a three-part Apex Legends workshop geared towards beginners aiming to compete professionally.

The Apex Academy, held in March of 2021, introduced participants to the ins and outs of popular battle royale game Apex Legends. The first part of the workshop covered the basics, including game objectives, looting, and characters and their kits. The second part moved on to the intermediate topics of gun specifics and map awareness. Finally, the third part covered more advanced and macro aspects including ranked play, team composition, and understanding playstyles.

The workshop was spearheaded by our very own instructors, who are experienced Apex Legends players hailing from the BGGC community:

  • Grayfindorr, who mains Lifeline and Bangalore;

  • RicRaction, who mains Crypto and Bloodhound;

  • Imfamousx1x, who mains Loba and Revenant;

  • MadMadameEm, who mains Lifeline, Wattson, and Octane.

Following the workshop, participants who had never thought they would be able to play FPS games competitively reported gaining confidence in their capabilities, with many of them competing in the subsequent Battle of the Bloth tournament, also held by BGGC.

Participants also received a certificate upon completion!

BGGC was delighted to hold the Apex Academy and Battle of the Bloth tournament. This event not only introduced Women and Femmes to the often exclusionary world of competitive gaming, but it also inspired many to continue down the path of competing and trying new ventures.
